A Familiar Path Forward: Resilience in the North Country

By David Coryer, Vice President of Coryer Staffing

With the recent election behind us, we have the opportunity to refocus on what truly matters: the strength, adaptability, and resilience of our North Country community. While the departure of a major assembly employer and the downsizing of key suppliers present challenges, opportunities continue to emerge across our region.

First and foremost, we honor the North Country’s enduring industries—apple and egg producers, industrial contractors, manufacturers, and businesses ensuring the seamless flow and distribution of goods across our northern border. These industries are vital to our communities and continue to seek new employees to support their growth.

The North Country is also welcoming new investments. Canadian businesses are choosing to establish operations in our region, as well as an exciting partnership with a Vermont-based company expanding to Plattsburgh. By growing their operations locally, these forward-thinking ventures, supported by the North Country Chamber of Commerce, bring diversification, job creation, and renewed energy to our economy. With our proximity to Canadian markets, a skilled workforce, and a welcoming community, we are well-positioned to thrive.

Education plays a crucial role in this resilience. Champlain Valley Educational Services (CVES) and CV-TEC, under the leadership of Dr. Mark Davey and Michele Friedman, are undergoing a major expansion to meet growing demand for hands-on education. Their programs, along with budding partnerships, internships, and apprenticeships, provide students with practical experience and prepare them to meet the needs of local industries. SUNY Plattsburgh is also contributing to this educational momentum, with rising enrollment that enriches both the university and the surrounding community. Its commitment to preparing skilled graduates ensures a steady pipeline of talent to support the North Country’s industries and long-term success.

Meanwhile, employment opportunities remain strong. Companies in manufacturing, assembly, warehousing, healthcare, and hospitality are actively hiring. At Coryer Staffing, we’re committed to connecting individuals with these opportunities through our mission, “Good People, Great Jobs.”

For those navigating career transitions, One Work Source offers invaluable resources, including job placement assistance, training programs, and career counseling. These services, combined with the efforts of the North Country Workforce Development Board, ensure that job seekers have the support they need to find success. Under the leadership of Executive Director Russ Kinyon, the Workforce Development Board has renewed its focus on aligning programs with local challenges, further enhancing opportunities for individuals and businesses alike.

While the balance of the USA reels from the distraction and dissension of opposition politics, the North Country’s resilience shines through. New businesses, expanded educational programs, and aligned workforce initiatives demonstrate our ability to adapt and thrive. For anyone affected by these changes, resources abound. Together, we’ll continue to move forward with strength and optimism.
