Embracing Change: The North Country’s Vibrant Labor Market

By Elizabeth Goerlitz-Coryer, Founder and CEO, Coryer Staffing

Lately, at Coryer Staffing, we’ve been seeing a steady stream of candidates walking through our doors. Not only are there more folks looking for opportunities, but the quality of these candidates is truly top-notch. It’s clear that our tagline, “Good People, Great Jobs,” isn’t just a slogan—it’s a reality we’re seeing play out every day.

Interestingly, the individuals coming to us aren’t always unemployed. Increasingly, we’re seeing working professionals who are eager to learn what may be available or on the horizon. This speaks volumes about the dynamic nature of our region’s workforce—people here are proactive, ambitious, and ready to seize new opportunities.

Now, I know many of us are a bit anxious about Nova Bus moving its operations back to Canada. It’s a significant shift, no doubt. But every conversation I’ve had with local leaders leaves me feeling optimistic. Garry Douglas, the CEO of the North Country Chamber of Commerce, and his team are on the ball, working hard to attract companies that can make the most of what our region has to offer.

The North Country has a strong history of providing attractive solutions to companies looking to establish themselves here. This includes raising awareness of available spaces, introducing companies to the variety of economic development organizations like The Development Corporation (TDC), and exploring cost-effective ways to build new facilities. Additionally, organizations like CDC, led by Matt Boire, specialize in commercial and industrial properties and play a crucial role in our region’s growth. Their slogan, “We don’t sell homes!” perfectly encapsulates their focus on driving commercial success in the North Country.

Looking at the numbers, the New York State Department of Labor shows that our unemployment rate has been pretty stable. Sectors like healthcare, education, and logistics are not just holding steady—they’re growing. Plus, with upcoming investments in infrastructure and renewable energy, there’s a forecasted bump in demand for skilled workers.

One of our region’s standout strengths is our workforce. We’ve got a rich history in fields like manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare. And it’s not just about having skills; it’s about adaptability. In today’s fast-paced world, employers need folks who can roll with the punches, learn new things, and tackle fresh challenges. The North Country delivers on that front.

Change is never easy, but if there’s one thing the North Country has proven time and again, it’s resilience. With our skilled workforce, strategic location, and proactive community leaders, we’re set to navigate these changes and come out stronger. The increasing number of high-quality job candidates is a clear sign that our labor market is vibrant and ready for what’s next.

At Coryer Staffing, we’re proud to connect good people with great jobs, and as we look ahead, I’m confident that the North Country will continue to be a fantastic place to live, work, and do business. With the combined efforts of our community and the undeniable quality of our workforce, the future looks bright.
