From his Capital Region upbringing, to his undergraduate education in the North Country and then back to Albany to earn his law degree, James Maswick finally settled in Lake Placid. He has been recognized as one of the “Best of the Adirondacks” as well as a “Rising Star” in a New York lawyers’ magazine. How do you contribute to the culture of your company? As a person charged with managing folks who work in the firm, I attempt to blend reassurance, humor and expectations when encouraging and pushing people to reach their potential.
What are you doing to make a difference in your community? I have served as Vice President of the Tri-Lakes Federal Credit Union and Treasurer of the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. I have also been honored to have many young people come to me to discuss their job situations and help them weigh pros and cons and make decisions about their future.
What is the single most important characteristic for success? Preparation.
What is your biggest professional success? Having played a role in growing our firm to its current size.
What important lesson have you learned in your career? “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over!”
What is your dream job? I think I have it? Other dream jobs outside of the law would be to be a professional golfer (I am not good), a winemaker, a bike courier or a Postman.
What is the biggest risk you have ever taken? Going into business for myself, with my sole partner at the time, Ed Flink. There is nothing like being in business for yourself, directing the “ship” and living with your decisions.
What is something that no one would guess about you? I have been the DJ for four of my friends’ weddings! Talk about needing to prepare to perform!
Write a note to your younger self… Always stay true to yourself, your family and friends and good things will follow. Work hard, but don’t be afraid to shut it down and go enjoy some recharge time. You will never regret it.
What can the North Country do to make this area more appealing to a younger generation? Encourage its young people to stay or move here. We enjoy an incredible quality of life if you like the outdoors, with tons of opportunity to get out and play. This area has its challenges, the forefront of which is affordable housing for those who want to make a career here, but if you work hard and enjoy your life, good things will come in this area.
