It was serendipitous that Nikki Deyo-Pugh’s career found her before she had completed college. She chose the opportunity and then finished her degree part-time. The empathetic Deyo-Pugh strives to make everyone feel at home on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Her feeling is that it is important for those who come through her office to know they are respected, heard and valued — something we all crave.
How does company culture impact you and what do you do to contribute to it?
In my office, we primarily serve on campus students living in the residence halls. We are constantly working through issues that arise, providing information and resources. I try my best to be as resourceful and helpful as I can every day.
Who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?
Jennifer Curry, a colleague of mine who is the Director of the Accessibility Resource Office here at SUNY Plattsburgh, has been my inspiration and mentor for the last six years. She has provided unwavering support and education, making me more confident in my professional role on campus. She makes me do better each day.
What strategies do you use to approach the day?
I wake up each day with a positive attitude, which involves at least two cups of coffee and a loud dose of music to get the day started. I prioritize what needs to get done during the day and work my way through my list. There are always unexpected situations that may arise and I adjust accordingly. I end each day with group exercise at the campus gym and a relaxing bath and then prepare to do it all over again.
